Specialist Coatings in Nigeria: What They Do and When You Need One

Most painting in Nigeria is decorative. A few jobs are not: steel that will rust, a roof that will cook, a floor that will be driven on, a structure that has to resist fire or salt water. In those cases the product is doing an engineering job, and a decorative paint will fail quickly and expensively.

This page explains the main families of specialist coating, what each is actually for, and how to tell a genuine specification from marketing language.

Where decoration stops and protection starts

The dividing line is the exposure. A wall in a living room has to look right and survive being wiped. A steel gantry has to stop corroding. Those are different problems, and the products are different in how they bond, how thick they are applied and what they are formulated to resist.

A useful test: if the surface is metal, constantly wet, driven on, exposed to chemicals, or required to resist fire, you are in protective-coating territory. If it is plaster inside a building, you are not.

Corrosion protection for steel

Steel rusts when water and oxygen reach the surface. The coating system’s job is to keep them out, and the system is only as good as its preparation.

A typical system is a primer with sacrificial or barrier properties, one or more intermediate coats to build film thickness, and a topcoat for UV and weather resistance. Prestige Marine Coatings covers protective systems for steel and structures.

The single biggest variable is surface preparation. Abrasive blasting to a defined standard is what most specifications assume; wire-brushing and painting over rust is what actually happens on many sites, and it is why coatings fail early. If a contractor cannot describe the preparation standard, the specification is not real.

Marine and anti-fouling

Salt water adds two problems to ordinary corrosion: chloride attack, which accelerates rust, and marine growth, which attaches to submerged surfaces and increases drag and weight.

Anti-fouling coatings are formulated to prevent that growth. They are specific to the substrate and to whether the surface is permanently submerged, alternately wet and dry, or splash zone. Using a decorative gloss on a jetty is not a shortcut; it is a delay.

Thermal and solar-reflective coatings

A metal roof in Nigerian sun reaches surface temperatures far above air temperature. That heat transfers into the building and shortens the life of whatever is coating the roof.

Solar-reflective coatings are formulated to reflect more of the sun’s energy, which lowers the surface temperature and the heat load underneath. They are worth considering on metal roofs, warehouses and industrial buildings where cooling is a real cost.

Thermal barrier coatings do a related job on process equipment and hot surfaces. What they are not is a substitute for roof insulation — they reduce heat gain, they do not eliminate it.

Fire protection: intumescent coatings

Structural steel loses strength when it gets hot. An intumescent coating reacts to fire by expanding into a char layer that insulates the steel and buys time for evacuation and firefighting.

This is a genuinely technical product: the required film thickness is calculated from the steel section, the fire rating and the exposure, not chosen from a colour card. It is specified by an engineer, applied to a strict thickness, and inspected. It is not a decorative product with a fire claim on the tin.

Floor coatings

Floors are a different family entirely: epoxy and polyurethane systems, applied over a prepared, often mechanically abraded substrate. They resist abrasion, chemicals and cleaning, and they can be built to a thickness that stands up to forklifts.

Floor coatings fail at the substrate, not the surface. A coating over a dusty, oily or damp slab will delaminate, and no product overcomes that. See our guide to painting factories and warehouses for how floors sit alongside the rest of an industrial job.

Anti-graffiti, anti-static and antimicrobial

These are real product categories, but they solve narrower problems than the marketing suggests.

  • Anti-graffiti coatings make a surface cleanable rather than permanently marked. Useful on external walls in public places; not a substitute for the wall being sound
  • Anti-static and conductive coatings dissipate static charge. They matter in electronics manufacturing, explosive atmospheres and some clean rooms. They do not matter in a domestic garage
  • Antimicrobial and anti-viral coatings claim to reduce microbial growth on the surface. They can help in clinical and food environments, but they do not replace cleaning, and no coating makes a dirty surface hygienic

High-build primers and powder coating

A high-build primer is applied thicker than a standard primer to fill and protect a rough or pitted substrate in one operation. It saves coats on pitted steel and rough concrete, and it is a genuine timesaver on large industrial jobs.

Powder coating is factory-applied — electrostatically sprayed and baked. It is excellent for aluminium and steel components, but it is not a site-applied product. If someone offers to powder coat a gate on site, they mean spray painting.

How to specify one

Any credible specialist specification states five things:

  1. The substrate — steel, concrete, timber, aluminium, and its condition
  2. The preparation — the standard, method and profile required
  3. The system — primer, build coats and topcoat, each named
  4. The film thickness — in microns, per coat and in total
  5. The service environment — what it has to resist, and for how long

If a quote gives one product name and a price, it is not a specialist specification. It is a guess with a number attached.

What is marketing and what is real

New coating technologies arrive with considerable noise — graphene, photocatalytic, phase-change, self-healing. Some are genuinely useful in specific applications. Most are not relevant to a Nigerian house, and several are marketed far beyond what the product does.

The tests that matter are unglamorous: does the manufacturer publish a data sheet with coverage, film build and service conditions; can they describe the preparation required; and can they tell you where the product should not be used. A supplier who answers those three questions is selling a coating. One who cannot is selling a word.
