A kitchen is the hardest interior room to paint and keep painted. Cooking grease settles on every surface, steam finds the ceiling, and the walls get wiped far more often than anywhere else in the house. An ordinary emulsion will look tired within a year.
Why the finish matters here
A matt wall absorbs grease and cannot be scrubbed without the paint film breaking down and going shiny in patches. Prestige Satin Finish gives a washable surface that takes a wet cloth, which is the single biggest difference between a kitchen that still looks painted after two years and one that does not.
The ceiling is its own problem. Steam rises and settles, and ceilings are usually the first thing to discolour. A dedicated ceiling product covers more evenly than a wall emulsion thinned down.
Getting the walls ready
Grease is what kills a kitchen paint job. Painting over a greasy wall, even with a good product, gives a coat that will not bond and will eventually peel in sheets. The walls need degreasing and rinsing before anything else happens, then filling, then priming.
- Degrease and rinse the walls and the ceiling
- Fill cracks and old fixing holes with Prestige Super Filler
- Spot-prime patches and any bare plaster
- Two coats of satin on the walls, one to two on the ceiling
