The living room takes more punishment than any other room in a Nigerian home: the most traffic, the most furniture against the walls, and the most visitors. It is also the room where the finish is most visible, which is why it is worth getting the preparation right rather than the colour.
Choosing the finish
Most living rooms are painted in Prestige Matt Finish, because a flat surface softens shadows on a wall that is not perfectly flat and reads as a cleaner colour. If the room is used hard, has children in it, or the walls get wiped, Prestige Satin Finish will take cleaning without the film breaking down.
Choosing the colour
Nigerian light is strong and warm for most of the year. A colour that looks soft on a sample card in a shop will often read two shades lighter on a wall that takes direct afternoon sun, and considerably darker in a room that only has a window on one side. Test on a panel in the actual room, at the actual time of day, before committing a whole wall.
What the job involves
- Moving and covering furniture, and protecting the floor
- Filling cracks and dents with Prestige Super Filler and sanding flush
- Washing down and priming, especially over an old chalky finish
- Cutting in the ceiling line and skirting before rolling the walls
- Two finish coats, with the second laid off in one direction
