Wood Painting

October 19, 2026

Doors, frames, skirting, wardrobes and furniture take more knocks than any wall, and they show every one of them. Woodwork is also where paint jobs fail first, usually from the inside out, because the preparation was skipped rather than because the gloss was poor.

Where the failures come from

  • Grease and handling — door edges and frame rebates are touched constantly and hold oil from hands
  • Old wax or polish — silicone polish stops a new coat bonding, and it does not wash off with water
  • Moisture in the timber — painting over damp wood traps water and blisters the film
  • Bare patches — a coat over bare timber without primer will sink and show

The right product

Prestige Premium Plus Gloss is the hard finish for woodwork: doors, frames, skirting, gates and joinery. It takes wiping and knocks far better than an emulsion, and it can be cleaned without dulling. Satin is the alternative where a full gloss is too reflective for the room.

How the work runs

Degrease and sand back to a key, fill any dents and sand flush, spot-prime bare timber, then two coats with a light sand between them. Doors are better taken off their hinges and painted flat than painted in place, which is why a door takes longer than it looks like it should.
