Two identical houses, one in Lagos and one in Ogun State, will not be quoted the same. The difference is not the paint. It is access, humidity, and the working conditions the painter has to plan around.

Coastal humidity is the real variable
Lagos sits in coastal humidity for most of the year, and the harmattan break is short. That changes three things:
- Drying times stretch out. Coats take longer to cure, so a job that is four days upcountry can be six in Lagos. Labour is charged by the day, so it costs more
- Mould is common, especially in bathrooms and on north-facing exterior walls. Washing and killing it before painting adds a day
- Exterior walls take more punishment from salt-laden air and driven rain, so the coating has to be stronger than a standard emulsion

Access is where Lagos quotes diverge most
The same three-bedroom flat is a different job depending on where it sits:
- Estate access. Some estates restrict working hours, require gate passes, or stop work at weekends. That stretches the schedule and adds days
- Parking and loading. Materials have to get from a vehicle to the door. On a tight street that means carrying everything further
- Upper floors with no lift. Everything goes up stairs, by hand
- High ceilings and stairwells. A double-height living room needs a tower or scaffolding, not a step ladder

The rainy season
Painting exterior walls during heavy rain is a waste of money. The film needs dry conditions to cure, and a wet wall traps moisture that pushes the paint off from behind. The workable window is the drier months, and inside the rainy season it has to be planned around the forecast.
Interior work is less affected, but a humid interior still slows the cure. Ventilation matters as much as the product.
What the job actually needs
- Washing down, especially in kitchens and anywhere near the sea air
- Filling and sanding before any paint
- Priming bare patches and new plaster
- Two coats on interior walls, more on a dark-to-light colour change
- A harder coating on exterior walls, and a check of the damp course before coating over anything
How to compare two Lagos quotes
Ask each contractor the same five things: the products by name, the litres, the number of coats, what preparation is included, and how many days of labour. Two quotes that differ by 40 per cent are usually doing different jobs, and once you match the specification they often come back to the same figure.
