Painting Bedrooms in Nigeria: Colour, Light and the Right Finish

A bedroom is the one room where the paint is mostly seen at the beginning and the end of the day, often under a bulb rather than daylight. That changes what works. A colour that looks warm in a showroom can feel cold at six in the morning, and a finish that looks smooth in daylight shows every roller mark under a lamp.

Bedrooms also make up more of a repaint budget than any other room type — three in a typical flat — so getting the decisions right the first time saves the most.

The right finish

Prestige Matt Finish is the usual answer. A flat surface does not bounce a lamp or a window back at you, it softens small imperfections in the plaster, and it is the easiest finish to touch up later without the patch showing as a different sheen.

Prestige Satin Finish belongs in bedrooms only where the walls get handled — a child’s room, or a room with a desk against the wall. It is washable, but it shows the state of the plaster far more than matt does.

Gloss never belongs on bedroom walls.

Light decides the colour

Nigerian daylight is strong and warm for most of the year, but bedrooms are often the darkest rooms in the house. Two cases:

  • One small window — keep the walls light and warm, and let a clean white ceiling do the work. A deep colour in a room like this closes it in, and it reads almost black at night
  • A large window or a balcony door — a deeper tone on one wall holds without shrinking the room, because there is enough light to carry it

Test the colour on a panel in the room and look at it under the lamp you actually use, not only in daylight. A shade that reads soft at noon can read grey at 10pm.

Worth knowing: a warm off-white that looks almost identical to a cool white on a card will look markedly different on a large wall, because the undertone dominates once there is more of it in view.

The ceiling matters more than people expect

A bright ceiling lifts a bedroom more than any change to the walls, and it is the cheapest part of the job. Use a ceiling product rather than wall emulsion thinned down. Prestige Best for POP where the ceiling is plaster of Paris.

Doors, frames and wardrobes

These take Prestige Premium Plus Gloss or a hard satin. In a bedroom, the door edge and the wardrobe handles are the surfaces that wear first, and a gloss film is what stops them looking shabby before the walls do.

Preparation

  1. Fill cracks, especially around window and door frames, with Prestige Super Filler
  2. Sand flush, then dust off. A filled patch that is not sanded shows through a matt finish clearly
  3. Wash down walls that have been exposed to cooking, damp or heavy handling
  4. Prime bare plaster and every filled patch
  5. Cut in around frames and skirting first, then roll the walls
  6. Two coats, laying the second off in one direction so the texture is even

How much paint three bedrooms need

Using a typical flat with three bedrooms at roughly 4m by 3.5m, 3.5m by 3m and 3m by 3m:

  • Bedroom 1: perimeter 15m, about 36 square metres after openings
  • Bedroom 2: perimeter 13m, about 31 square metres
  • Bedroom 3: perimeter 12m, about 28 square metres
  • Total wall area: about 95 square metres
  • At two coats and around 11 square metres per litre per coat, that is about 17 litres
  • Add 10 per cent for waste: about 19 litres, or five 4 litre tins

Ceilings add a further 38 square metres, needing about 7 litres at two coats. Confirm the coverage on the tin you buy. The full method is in our paint quantity guide.

Mistakes that show up later

  • Choosing a colour on a card in a shop instead of on the wall
  • Using satin over uneven plaster, which advertises every repair
  • Skipping the ceiling because it “looks fine” — it is usually the dullest surface in the room
  • Painting one coat and stopping, which reads thin wherever light rakes across the wall
  • Buying paint for all three rooms in separate batches, which can leave a slight shade difference between rooms

On that last point: paint mixed in different production batches can vary slightly. Where you can, buy the whole job at once.

Questions people ask

Is one coat enough if I am keeping the same colour? Sometimes, if the wall is sound and clean. But a single coat over an older finish rarely covers evenly, and you will see the difference at the edges.

Can I paint over wallpaper? Not reliably. Strip it, wash off the paste, and prepare the plaster underneath.

What colour makes a small bedroom look bigger? A light wall and a ceiling painted the same white, not a darker feature wall. Contrast makes a small room read as two smaller spaces.
